About Shannon Farrington
Hi there I'm Shannon. For the last two years, I have been Senior Director of WHS and Early Intervention and Wellbeing for the Safe at School Taskforce in the ACT Education Directorate (almost 100 schools) and found it rewarding to know that some of the work my team and I achieved in the Safe at School Taskforce made schools safe places for educators, support staff and children.
Prior to that, I was Operations Manager for six years with the QLD WorkSafe Regulator, managing WHS inspectors in a team environment; across offices north of Cardwell to the Torres Strait, involving response management for all workplace injuries and incidents, with a strong focus on audit analysis and prevention campaigns to lead change in all industries in QLD to prevent future injuries.

About Jon Flower
My name is Jon Flower. I have spent a career being an inspector with Workplace Health and Safety Queensland, based in Cairns.
My passion for safety has derived from attending 13 workplace fatalities in the past 12 years, attending countless incidents, and interviewing physically, emotionally, and psychologically broken people associated with those incidents.
I have a Diploma of Government - Inspections and Investigations, and during the thirty years I’ve been an Inspector, I’ve been engaged with the Diving, Rural, Industrial, Shipyards, Psychosocial, Construction, Civil Construction, Hazardous and Chemical industry sectors in a proactive and reactive capacity. I have family ties to the Torres Strait, I currently engage with the Aboriginal, Torres Strait and Remote communities at length, focusing on building their capacity towards the implementation of a systematic approach to safe work practices and procedures.
I enjoy working closely with people regarding their WHS needs, and their safe work practices and procedures in the workplace. I enjoy creating a forum of learning from each other and have seen through lived experience that WHS is optimised when all employees have ownership of the safety management systems that they operate under. For conflict of interest reasons, I will not perform any work with companies who are regulated by the Office of Industrial Relations, Queensland but will be keen to assist others, particularly in state of origin 'Blues' country!
When I’m not at work, I enjoy getting out and about in my boat and four wheel drive.

My Commitment
Safety and the elements of the legislation are my weird passion, but my cup is filled when I know I’ve left a site/workplace/office in a state where it’s unlikely that the workplace will ever have to face a grieving partner, mother, father, or leave children without a parent. I’ve seen it. I’ve seen the looks on the other worker’s faces too.
I’ve also reviewed too many case files where there’s blood on the floor to want to see that happen again, and I am fully committed to making sure that’s never a reality for you.
I spent seven years in the Australian Army, predominantly with heavy transport and warehousing, and facilitating international movement of cargo and personnel by air, rail, road and sea. During this role, I deployed to Afghanistan and the Solomon Islands. I then switched to the Royal Australian Air Force for a career change where I did supply chain management and more warehousing.
At the end of my career, I provided a safety service to a Navy unit known as ‘The RAAFie’. I received commendations throughout my career in the ADF for high levels of leadership, initiative, and motivation for building strong teams; capable of delivering against expectations through engaging interactions, mentoring relationships and empowering staff to focus on organisational goals and outcomes.
I have a small team of freelance retired WHS professionals and former inspectors who assist me (when there is no conflict of interest) with some of the Codes of Practice I am less familiar with and help write your Policies and Procedures when I am busy on site. They politely requested not to be named, as they are lucky enough to enjoy a stroll on the beach or golf course on most days.
